We are pleased to announce that we have reached the finals of the Northern Farmer Awards in the Outstanding Achievement category.
The awards give the farming industry in the North the opportunity to stand up and be recognised; giving local farmers, suppliers, breeders and everyone involved in the industry the respect that they deserve.
We have grown considerably since Victoria & James’ Grandad, Harry opened our first Butchers shop in 1929. Their father, Andrew opened the farm shop in Thornton in the early 70’s and we never forget our routes! Our farm was one of the earliest examples of diversification in the early 1970s, selling meat from the animals on the farm and vegetables from local farmers. Spanning 100 acres of Yorkshire countryside, Keelham Farm is home to 200 pedigree Texel breeding ewes and produces up to 350 lambs each lambing season.
Built on the working sheep farm, our Thornton shop has been producing and selling fresh food for over 40 years. In June 2015, we opened our second farm shop in Skipton. Our business model has grown over the decades and we now stock produce from more than 400 local farmers and suppliers across our two shops. Our aim is to make fresh, tasty, affordable local produce available to everyone.
We also like to do our bit for the environment. 90kw wind turbines power our Thornton shop and the farm is also powered completely by wind. Our Skipton shop was built by re-purposing an existing structure instead of demolishing and building new. We also have heat reclaim on refrigeration, a sedum roof, LED lighting and we will soon have solar panels. All our waste is recycled, and our farm turns all vegetable waste from our shops into compost, which is then used on the farm land.
It is an honour to reach the finals of the Northern Farmer Awards as it shows that all our hard work and continuing success is being recognised in the farming arena. The winner’s will be announced on the 15th February.
