Love Food Hate Waste

Love Food Hate Waste

Our Veg Exchange Scheme is in full swing! Homegrown fruit and veg are arriving daily and it’s great to see a wonderful variety of locally grown produce in our shops.

Here at Keelham we love food but we hate waste. Our Veg Exchange Scheme is a great way to stop your carefully grown fruit and vegetables from going to waste by swapping your excess for credit which can then be spent in our shops. Who knew that it was possible to grow a pork pie!?

Since the scheme launched in 2010, more than 200 customers have signed up to our Veg Exchange Scheme and a staggering 6,913 deliveries of unneeded fruit and veg have been made. It benefits both the local grower and our non-gardening customers who appreciate fantastically fresh veggies.

The first customer to sign up to our Veg Exchange Scheme was 85 year old Roger Baert. His redcurrant bushes were producing up to 20,000 currants per season and even though he used them to brew his own wine, thousands of the berries were going to waste! He has since provided us with raspberries, gooseberries and a variety of herbs. Thanks Roger!

73 year old Rita Robinson is also a wonderful Veg Exchange supplier. Here is what she has to say:

‘I love the Veg Exchange – it keeps me busy in my garden in the fresh air. My husband and I owned a small holding not far from Keelham, which my son now runs, so we’ve always been keen growers. In my allotment I grow courgettes, marrows, garden peas, a number of different beans and five types of tomatoes. I used to freeze the excess, but it always tastes better when it’s fresh, so it’s lovely that I can now share my fresh produce with the community instead of it going in my freezer or going to waste.’

If you have surplus homegrown fruit and vegetables that you would like to put to good use, join our Veg Exchange Scheme! See below for more details or pick up a membership form in either of our shops. Our Veg Exchange Scheme ends on the 30th Sepetember.
